Building Bridges and Breaking Barriers: My Journey with UF NABA

When I look back on my college experience, one of the most impactful chapters was my involvement with the University of Florida chapter of the National Association of Black Accountants (UF NABA). Being one of the ten founding members of this organization wasn’t just about creating a student group—it was about building a legacy, fostering inclusivity, and opening doors for underrepresented students in the world of business and accounting.

Planting the Seeds of Change

The idea of starting UF NABA stemmed from a desire to address a critical gap on campus: the need for a space where Black students in accounting and related fields could come together, share resources, and thrive. As an ally and advocate, I knew the significance of representation. We needed more than just a seat at the table; we needed to build our own table, one that celebrated Black excellence and empowered students to achieve their full potential.

Through late-night brainstorming sessions, endless emails, and collaborative planning, our small but determined team worked tirelessly to bring this vision to life. From crafting our mission statement to outlining initiatives that would drive professional development, it was a labor of love that ultimately became a cornerstone of our university community.

A Space for Growth and Connection

UF NABA was more than just a student organization—it was a family. It became a safe space where students could navigate the challenges of academics, internships, and career preparation while staying grounded in their identities. We hosted events that bridged the gap between students and industry professionals, from networking panels to resume workshops.

One of the moments I’ll never forget was our first professional development workshop. The room was packed with students eager to learn and mentors ready to share their experiences. Watching attendees walk away feeling inspired and prepared for their next steps made all the effort worth it.

Lessons Learned

Being part of UF NABA taught me invaluable lessons about leadership, teamwork, and resilience. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and showed me the power of collaboration. As a founding member, I learned how to navigate the complexities of building something from the ground up, from balancing budgets to ensuring everyone felt heard and valued.

But perhaps the most profound lesson was the importance of community. UF NABA wasn’t just about professional growth—it was about uplifting one another, celebrating our wins, and supporting each other through challenges.

Looking Ahead

As I prepare for the next chapter of my journey, I carry the lessons and memories of UF NABA with me. My time with this organization reaffirmed my commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion—values I will continue to champion in all aspects of my life and career.

To anyone considering getting involved in organizations like NABA, I can only say this: do it. The connections you make, the skills you develop, and the sense of purpose you gain are unmatched. Together, we can create spaces that uplift and empower, paving the way for the next generation to succeed.

UF NABA will always hold a special place in my heart. It wasn’t just an organization; it was a movement—a testament to what’s possible when passionate individuals come together to make a difference. And for that, I am forever grateful.
